Children's Health and Environment Caretakers (CHEC), is a Tanzanian community based organisation CBO, promotes socio economic, cultural, environmental and human development in Mwanza, Tanzania. CHEC is conducting activities on poor and helpless people of the community in the area of health, poverty alleviation, rural development, human rights, formal and informal education, human resource development, and training.
Since its inception in 2003, the organization has been working with children, youths, parents, Government and NGO bodies in the promotion of issues related to the welfare and rights of children and the youth. It works to identify and remedy the needs of children and youth, especially the underprivileged in the rural areas through a participatory approach.
CHEC is also engaged in education and training in the areas of HIV/AIDS and youth leadership. Popular education thus forms part of its outreach strategies where such a facility would otherwise be unavailable to children and youth in the target communities. This mobilization by CHEC enables development to come along with community empowerment and social engagement by all concerned.
All of these issues are addressed through a series of programmes and strategies which aim at a sustainable contribution of CHEC to development within the framework of the MDGs, NEPAD and global youth employment frameworks.
