OUR MISSION What do we stand for?
Our mission is to bring children, youth and nature together for the benefit of both, to inspire and work with children and youth to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment, and engage children and youth and community at large in creating and sustaining health, dynamic outdoor spaces in schools and communities.
How do we do this?
By adopting an action-oriented educational system which builds self-confidence among children and youth, through sharing practical experience and working as a team toward a sustainable environment.
How it all began?
We draw inspiration from philosophy and concept of Edmund Burke. Burke is quoted as saying "Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do little" He sought to extend his people both physically and mentally, to make them realize more of their potential to contribute to the development of character by "impelling them into experience" Children's Health and Environment Caretakers (formerly known as children's health and environment club) was created in 2003 as a community action group not-for-profit, aiming to bring children and youth in the community together to preserve the good aspects of our environment, health and eliminate the worst; and set itself to serve a definite purpose of offering much needed opportunities to the children and youth to promote their self expression through action-oriented experiences in preserving the natural environment, to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment.
This is realized by:
Carrying out and organizing activities based on group/club programme, this involves members and schools participants. Organized activities include:-
- Planting trees
- Cleaning market places
- Using such creative methods as songs and sports/games
- Lake Victoria Clean up campaign
- Creating posters to educate the public how they can prevent environment pollution
- Establishment of garden at member's home (this is done by members individually) etc
The CHEC experience [Objectives]
An understanding of our philosophy, objectives and methods is imperative to drive full benefit of nature and leads to a more creative, educational and sustainable use of the environment. The following are the objectives towards which the children's Health and Environment Caretakers experience is directed:-
(a)Advocacy:
To voice children and youth concerns on the state of the environment and actively promote environment repair.
(b)Environmental Awareness:
To instill greater appreciation for and understanding of the natural environment as evidenced by curiosity being willing to learn, exhibiting care towards living things and natural objects; and adhering to minimal impact techniques and ethics in the nature.
(c)Learning:
To instill an attitude of participation in experimental learning as evidence by asking questions, being willing to try new things and participating in the environmental activities and gaining a mastery over newly acquired knowledge and skills.
To provide situations and experiences which can focus, test and refine children and youth values of life emphasizing nature compassion, tenacity, sensible self-denial and will power.
